ABOUT OUR CHURCH

History

On August 23, 1973, a small group of people met on a Thursday evening for a Bible study at a local YMCA here in Frederick, MD. This fellowship would continue to grow and would shortly begin meeting on Sunday mornings under the leadership of the founding pastor, Pastor Sam Thompson. Frederick Baptist Temple was officially and formally organized on Sunday morning, November 15, 1973, meeting then at the Frederick Community College. This was the humble beginnings of the Frederick Baptist Church, which at that time was known as Frederick Baptist Temple. The church would continue to meet at the Community College for the next several years where it would experience steady growth and souls added to the Kingdom. In 1978 the Lord provided an opportunity for the church to secure its own property in which to grow and build on. In February of that year, Frederick Baptist Temple purchased its current property which is located at 5305 Mt. Zion Road. Over the next 13 years the church would successfully complete two major building programs; this would include the church’s current auditorium and educational facilities, both of which are first class and spacious.

In April, 2000, Pastor Thompson retired after serving 27 years as the founding Pastor of Frederick Baptist Temple. In May of that same year the church called Jeff Bowersock to serve as the new Pastor. Under Pastor Bowersock’s leadership the church continued to experience growth in attendance. The Lord used Pastor Bowersock to help fine-tune the various aspects of the church’s organizational structure.

Several families that are still serving as active members were added to the church during this time. In June, 2007, the church would change its name from Frederick Baptist Temple to Frederick Baptist Church. Pastor Bowersock resigned as pastor during the summer of 2009, being called of God back into church planting. On August 23, 2009, Frederick Baptist Church called our current pastor, John Y. Seay, to lead the church.

Pastor Seay became only the third pastor in our church’s proud history. Under his leadership the church has experienced rapid growth and a fresh excitement for the things of God. There is a growing excitement and genuine enthusiasm among the people of Frederick Baptist Church! FBC is currently in a building program that will facilitate immediate and future growth for many years to come.

We believe that Frederick Baptist Church was called into existence by our Saviour for “such a time as this.” Our church is continuing to build on the solid foundation that has been laid over the years and expand our avenues of outreach with the Gospel to those who need Christ. Frederick Baptist Church has always been and continues to be a soul winning, Christ-honoring, Mission-minded, Bible-believing ministry.
